Is balance a real thing?

July 17, 2019

There’s been this buzzword lately, balance, in your work and life. It’s almost this sort of unicorn holy grail that people are trying to attain and is it actually something that exists?

I’m not entirely sure if balance exists, I believe that we live in seasons and that sometimes you have more going on and sometimes its more quiet, that’s the case for me anyway.

When it comes to yoga poses though, I love balance poses, where you have to concentrate to really get into the pose, to feel centered and connected to your body and to your practice. This is what this yoga class is all about.

Bringing a sense of awareness to that moment, is what we can take off of the mat and into our real lives. Rather than wishing, hoping for that next situation or goal to make you feel better, what about enjoying what you have now?

I know that some people hate balance poses, due to falling out and feeling embarrassed in a group class. Honestly like most teachers, I am not judging you because you have fallen out of a balancing pose.

You may be tired and you may have to work more on your core, but these are small details that can be overlooked, laugh it off and try again next time. Yoga isn’t a driving test.

Things don’t always work out, like falling out of balance. The important part is how you react to that? I used to be very judgemental and self critical, I still am (I’m working on it).

Yet I’ve realised since meditating and practicing yoga, that a lot of things don’t matter, to get very angry and hold a grudge might feel satisfying for a while but it’ll leave you rotten in the long term.

While also you may hold an expectation, that could be coming externally or entirely thought of by you. Talking to those around us about our feelings, seeing that they may feel exactly the same way, could lighten your feeling of lack of balance.

So learn to take a rest, let go of expectations and be ready to laugh it off instead of feeling grudgeful.

Do you believe in balance? Or do you reckon its a pile of poo too? Let me know in the comments below.

Lots of love
